A Thought on Cookies

I think I'm a fairly good cook and I really enjoy it. One thing that I can't make, no matter how hard I try, is sugar cookies. My mom makes the best sugar cookies on the planet, however that gene was not passed to me. Whenever I make her recipe, they always fail. I can't make them from a mix. The following came from the pre-made dough you buy in the refrigerated section of the store. I've never tried it, but as you can see, epic fail once again. Can you tell what shapes they are? You might guess that the one in the lower right hand corner is a rabbit. You'd be right. I didn't even use a cookie cutter on that one because there wasn't enough dough. What are the others? Ok, I'll tell you. The top left is a dog. Doesn't that look just like a dog? Perhaps a dog that's just been run over? The top right isn't a dinosaur, although that's what it looks like. It's actually a seal. The bottom left looks like a badly distorted flower, but it's really a lizard. The middle is a penguin. So there you have it. I would like to report that even though they look horrid, they tasted good. However, when you're working with butter, white sugar and white flour whatever you make is going to taste pretty good.
It's not all failures at this house, oh no. This is my sunflower. Well, technically I should say this was my sunflower. It's been kind of blocking my front door for a month. Then two weeks ago it totally took over and was completely blocking the door. Besides that fact, it was swarming with bees. It cut down on solicitors, at the very least. I wasn't able to take the fist day of school photo on the porch due to the sheer size and potential danger of it. The funniest thing is that we didn't even plant it. It just came up from a fallen seed. How I wish the rest of the garden was like that.

Anyway, yesterday Nathan cut it down and made me this beautiful boquet that is sitting on my table. Isn't is nice? It probably won't last very long, but now I can enjoy it inside and people can once again feel welcome at my home.

I have always loved sunflowers. So beautiful. I can't believe how big it got, it actually would have been a really fun beginning to a haunted house, having a "living" sunflower that attacted you when you entered. So sad on your cookies, I love sugar cookies too but i'm not too interesting in decorating them. I just slab the frosting on and eat a plate full.

I can't manage sugar cookies either!! But I find if I put enough frosting on them no one knows the difference. But they are one of my favorite treats so if your mom makes a winning batch - save me one!! -Jacy
